A filmmaker who creates
make films based in Nara,
the place where she was born and raised.
KAWASE's relentless pursuit of reality
has extended beyond the boundaries
of documentary fiction,
earning her numerous awards
at the Cannes Film Festival
and other international film festivals.
Her major works include
Suzaku, The Mourning Forest, Second Window,
Sweet Bean, Radiance, and True Mothers.
While expanding her creative
endeavors to the global stage,
KAWASE has maintained an active presence
in her hometown of Nara,
where she founded the
Nara International Film Festival in 2010
and
has been working to
cultivate the next generation of filmmakers.
KAWASE has been the official film director
for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics,
a UNESCO goodwill ambassador,
a special international ambassador for
Nara Prefecture,
and a senior advisor and theme project producer for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
She is also active in various genres,
including TV commercial directing,
essay writing, and acting.
In her personal time,
KAWASE has been farming rice for over a decade.
She has a new feature film slated for
release in fall 2025.

The Dialogue Theater exists in a virtual space. It offers a new way to enjoy dialogue that transcends the boundaries of time and space.
Dialogue Theater - Sign of Life - is located on the Island of the Forest of Life in the Virtual Expo Park. At the venue, a virtual KAWASE Naomi, wearing an attendant's uniform, appears as a guide. Visitors can enter the world of the Expo as avatars and enjoy interacting and conversing with the nature in the venue in three areas that mimic the actual venue.
